Quote:

"RIGL 16-2-17 Right to a safe school asserts that each students, staff member, teacher and administrator has a right to attend/and or work at a school which is safe and secure, and which is conductive to learning, and which is free from the threat, actual or implied, of physical harm by a disruptive student"

Explanation: I feel this right is extremely important for everyone safety. I just saw a video of a teacher expressing that one of her students was googling on a school issued Chromebook "how do I kill my teacher" and that student had a talking to and returned back to class. The teacher resigned and continued her teaching at another school due to not feeling safe. Every person should be held to a high standard for any threat, real or not, due to the world we live in now. It is so unfortunate that teacher had to leave the school she was teaching at for 15 years because her school system failed her and did not ensure pure safety.

"RIGL 16-21-34 safe schools act and the RI statewide Bullying Policy, recognize that the bullying of a student creates a climate of fear and disrespect that can seriously impair the student's health and negatively affect learning. Bullying undermines the safe learning environment that students need to achieve their full potential"

Explanation: This policy is highly important and true to the most. I feel comfortable enough to share that in middle school I was bullied all three years for quite literally everything and anything. This started to take a tole on my mental health and resulted in me missing school for excessive periods which then had me fall behind. This is a domino effect of what bullying can cause, and it truly affect students whether you think so or not. It is really important this policy in placed in school and is addressed when needed. Bully''s have no idea the real damage they're doing to someone, its important to make it clear their harming someone else.

recognize that the bullying of
a student creates a climate of fear and disrespect that can seriously impair the student's health and
negatively affect learning. Bullying undermines the safe learning environment that students need to
achieve their full potential. The expression, physical act or gesture may include, but is not limited
to, an incident or incidents that may be reasonably perceived as being motivated by characteristics
such as race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity
and expression or mental, physical, or sensory disability, intellectual ability or by any other
distinguishing characteristic. The purpose of the policy is to ensure a consistent and unified
statewide approach to the prohibition of bullying at school.

Quote: "We want to be able to feel good about who we are in our own gender identities. And we need to learn about other people's gender identities so that we can do our jobs of making other people feel good about who they are too because that's really important"

Explanation: This quote is important because it touches on two human needs, self acceptance and empathy and ties them directly to how we relate to others in a diverse society. Everyone deserves to feel secure, respected and validated in who they are. Gender identity is a deeply personal part of self. Feeling good about it is essential for mental health, confidence, and a sense of belonging. By educating ourselves about the wide range of genders, we foster empathy, reduce ignorance, and challenge harmful stereotypes. It's not just about being "politically correct" it's about being inclusive and respectful. Helping others feel accepted and valued help create safe places in schools, work places, within friendships, and this is where people can thrive.

  1. Hi Dakota! First, I want to thank you for sharing your personal experience. I am so sorry you had to go through that and I am sorry that you weren't protected. I really like that you brought up how both teachers and students can experience targeting and that schools need to take action when there is bullying/harassment present in schools. I had a teacher in my high school share how she had to change schools due to a high school student following her home and threatening to kill her. This type of harassment also happens to students; with cyberbullying it can be even worse.

  2. Hi Dakota! I agree with you that everyone deserves to feel safe and respected regardless of who they are, or how they identify themselves. It is so important to properly educate people so that we can work towards becoming more accepting and ensuring that everyone can feel safe and comfortable being who they are. I think resources like this book can help to teach people about the different kinds of ways in which people can choose to identify themselves. I feel like sometimes it is harder for adults to change their minds once they have set opinions, so educating people on these types of topics from a young age can help the future generations be more accepting.
